Should You Buy a Dishwasher?

Most people with dishwashers state they couldn’t live without one. Others don’t see the need for them at all. If you’re undecided about whether to invest in a dishwasher, read on.

The Benefits of Dishwashers

Whatever you think about dishwashers, you can’t deny they have many benefits.

Using a dishwasher is easier than washing up by hand

It should go without saying, but it’s much easier to wash up with a dishwasher than with elbow grease - especially when it comes to stubborn, dried stains.

Dishwashers save energy and water

What uses more water? A dishwasher or washing up by hand?

The answer, you might be surprised to hear, is washing up by hand.

But how much water does a dishwasher save compared to washing up by hand?

This is the real surprise. Assuming your dishwasher’s full, it uses up to 75% less water than washing up by hand. A welcome relief for your bills.

Some dishwashers are even more economical; for example an A++ rated dishwasher will save up to 20% more energy than an A rated dishwasher.

Life’s too short to wash dishes

A UK lab study found that on average, Brits spend roughly an hour a day washing up. If you have a large family, then you’ll understand the struggles involved in tackling piles of washing up night after night.

But if you have a dishwasher?

The same study found that those with dishwashers spent an average of just 10 minutes a day loading and unloading their dishwasher - that’s 50 minutes saved a day.

Dishwashers are more thorough than washing by hand

A dishwasher is able to maintain a water temperature of over 75 degrees Celsius. When washing by hand, the water temperature rarely exceeds 40 degrees.

What temperature is needed to properly clean dishes? 60 degrees.

Dishwashers save your hands

If you’ve been washing dishes for years you might have noticed the damage it does to your hands, leaving skin dry, coarse, and prone to cracking.

Your hands will thank you if you switch to using a dishwasher.

You’ll never argue over the dishes again

“Who’s doing the dishes?” is an age-old argument. Sadly, there’s no way to put it to rest other than buying a dishwasher. Those dishes will always need to be done, and nobody will ever want to do them.

Save yourself the hassle and let your dishwasher do the hard work.

How Much Does a Dishwasher Cost?

The cost of a new dishwasher can be as little as £200 (or less, in some cases) or as much as £1000 (or more). How much a dishwasher costs you is based on how much you’re willing to spend on it, but one thing that’s true of many dishwashers is that price does not necessarily equate to quality.

Some very pricey dishwashers have received poor reviews with models at half the price have performing far better.

Expensive dishwashers tend to boast more features, but this doesn’t necessarily mean they’re any better at cleaning. If you’re not too fussy about features, then you really just need a dishwasher from a reputable company that a) cleans your dishes and b) doesn’t break easily.

Our ranges of freestanding and integrated dishwashers are from market-leading brands that have shown time and again they can be relied upon to deliver.

Will You Use a Dishwasher?

While many people can’t or won’t live without a dishwasher, not everyone will find them that useful.

Do you live alone or in a couple? If you do, then it might not be worth buying a dishwasher. Unless you regularly cook with lots of pots and pans it’ll take a while for you to get a full load (and running your dishwasher when it’s not full significantly reduces its energy efficiency).

Plus, if you’re only cleaning up after one or two people, using a dishwasher may actually take more time than washing up by hand. It takes roughly ten minutes to load and unload a small amount of washing up. It would probably also take you ten minutes to scrub them, dry them and put them away – and that’s not counting the time you have to wait for a dishwasher programme to finish.

Things change if you regularly entertain guests. When you’ve prepped and cooked for a large group you don’t want to spend more time and effort cleaning it up (and you don’t want to ask your guests to roll their sleeves up either!) In this case you’ll probably find a dishwasher to be invaluable.
